Naoki Yamamoto, MD

Prof. Naoki Yamamoto was born in Harbin (Manchuria, China) on May 8, 1945 . He was granted his degree in Medicine in 1970. He served as Full Professor of Virology at several Universities such as Yamaguchi University, Tokyo Medical and Dental University and National University of Singapore. He also served as Director of AIDS Research Center at National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Japan.

As regards the scientific activity, Prof. Yamamoto has published more than 800 English articles in peer-reviewed journals, his total Impact Factor of representative 50 papers is over 1000. He has participated in more than 800 national and international congresses and has given more than 400 lectures to national and international meetings. He played a role as an Editor-in-Chief of Virus Genes and J. Cancer Res. Clin. Oncol., and used to be an Editorial member of several international journals (Antiviral Research, Viral Immunol., J. Viral Diseases, AIDS and Virologica Sinica). He also contributed as an Ad Hoc Reviewer for many international journals.

His expertise is in Virology with the emphasis on investigations into the mechanisms of viral replication and pathogenesis induced by various viruses, especially human retroviruses HIVs and HTLVs. His main achievements include establishment of a quantitative transformation system for normal lymphocytes by EBV, promotion of the EBV transformation by a tumor promoter, development of a method to transform normal lymphocytes by HTLV-I, discovery of gp46, a best candidate as a vaccine antigen for HTLV-I, first proposal of African origin of human retroviruses, discovery of HTLV-I-transformed cell lines (MT-4 and MT-2) as the most sensitive system for HIV infection and replication, development of a reverse transcriptase inhibitor, stavudine for treatment of HIV-1, development of anti-dengue drugs and studies on oncolytic viruses.
