Reducing exposure to broad-spectrum antibiotics for bloodstream infection
Abstract
Sepsis is an overwhelming, dysregulated inflammatory response caused by infection (1) and commonly results specifically from bloodstream infections (BSI). Annually, there are well over 19 million world-wide cases of sepsis with more than a million in the US (2). With annual costs exceeding $20 billion, sepsis is the most expensive condition treated in US hospitals (3).
